Located just 4 km from La Casona, Cabárceno Nature Park is far from a typical zoo. It is the largest sanctuary on the Iberian Peninsula where animals roam in semi-freedom. This reclaimed natural haven, built upon the rugged terrain of an ancient open-cast mine, transports you to the heart of Africa in an instant.
The park hosts a spectacular array of species. Imagine herds of elephants crossing your path, or spotting bison, giraffes, rhinos, and majestic predators like tigers, jaguars, and bears. Families will love the interactive areas where ostriches, elands, and giraffes roam—some so close you can almost feel their breath (though do keep an eye on those cheeky ostriches!).
We recommend entering through the East Gate, at Cabarceno town (the closest to us) to explore over 20 km of scenic paved routes. Whether you navigate by car, bike, or on foot—or choose a bird’s-eye view from the two cable car lines—the vistas are breathtaking. Be sure to catch the awe-inspiring flight demonstrations featuring birds of prey and sea lions (typically at 12:00 and 16:00).
The striking reddish karst formations that define Cabárceno are a legacy of its mining past. Iron extraction in the Peña Cabarga massif dates back to Roman times, supplying historic foundries for centuries until 1989, when the mine was transformed into this extraordinary nature reserve.
